There is a certain satisfaction to growing your own vegetables from watching them sprout through the soil each morning admiring how much they have grown overnight. Then looking at organic ways to protect your vegetables (planting sweet basil and marigold between the lines of vegetables seems to work) so they can be served fresh and pesticide free to the table. It is such a wonderful cycle from planting, to growing, to eating.
Sometime ago someone said looking after plants is like looking after children. Plants, like children, need water, food and love to grow. These vegetables certainly get all of that and more as at least twice a week they grow to the sounds of classical music or Buddhist chanting. This has had such an impact that the abundant crop gets shared with friends and neighbours.
There was once a story where a mother, everytime she cooked, pulled a tin down from the top shelf, opened it and always put a pinch of whatever was inside the tin in her meals. Her family used to watch this in wonder. Then one day her daughter asked her 'what's in the tin mama'? Her mother replied 'a very special ingredient'. This was all she said and this ritual continued for years a pinch of that very special ingredient went into every meal prepared.
Then one day the lady died. Her daughter was cleaning up the kitchen after the wake, when she saw the tin on the top shelf. She took it down and inside was one piece of paper, a little frayed, at the edges and written on it was the word 'LOVE'.
So with the abundance of vegetables from the garden it seemed appropriate to find some good recipes to extend the passion for growing the vegetables into the cooking. This lead to internet searches which provided endless recipes many of which required fancy ingredients, plenty of time and a degree in cooking! Then 3 gem websites came to light...
